Great Beers Of The World: And How To Brew Them At Home

This book takes you around the world in search of the great beers and provides a fascinating insight into the history of the world’s major beer styles and the different brewing methods that created them. Each beer is discussed, the taste is described and, best of all, a recipe provided, chosen to represent a particular style. (For example, Lowenbrau is chosen to represent a Bavarian lager.) The recipes do not try to replicate a particular brand but show you how to brew in the general style of a country or area — allowing you to learn and experiment until you create a beer to your taste. Beers selected for the book are widely available all over the world and recipes include: German Pilsner • North European Pilsner • Helles Bock • American/Canadian Light • American Premium • New Zealand Premium • Australian Standard • English Pale and Dark Bitters • Special Bitters • Brown Ale • English Mild Irish Red Ale • Scottish Heavy Pale Ale • Stout • Australian Sp (more…)

Homebrewing For Dummies

Amazon.com Review

Marty Nachel immediately dispels two long-held myths in Homebrewing for Dummies: brewing your own beer isn’t all that difficult, and despite all that you may have heard or assumed, facial hair is not a prerequisite to being a good homebrewer. Like all other books in the popular Dummies series, Homebrewing for Dummies is a clear, concise, how-to guide for the do-it-yourselfer. As it turns out, making beer isn’t hard to do if you have a stove, some basic equipment, and a little time on your hands. Here’s your chance to make your own Hefeweizen or India Pale Ale and avoid another trip to the local microbrewery; Nachel provides the recipes and solid step-by-step instructions. And if making beer isn’t enough, the chapter on evaluation will teach even the most pedestrian beer drinker to critically analyze homebrews like a pro. Nachel is well qualified. The former welder is an award-winning brewer and one of the top beer writers in the (more…)

Cuisinart DCC-1200 12-Cup Brew Central Coffeemaker

Amazon.com Review

Strikingly retro in brushed stainless-steel with black-plastic accents, this 12-cup coffeemaker includes Cuisinart’s best brewing technology and premium features for ease and flexibility. The digital clock/timer is programmable for automatically brewing “wake-up” coffee at a selected time and for turning off the warming plate up to four hours in advance. Removing the glass carafe from the warming plate automatically pauses the brewing process for a quick pour, and the warming plate’s temperature can be adjusted. For maximum flavor, the machine can be set to brew one to four 5-ounce cups or five to twelve cups, and it includes a charcoal water filter. For convenience, a permanent Gold Tone filter eliminates messy paper filters and an indicator-light shows when decalcification is needed. The coffeemaker measures 14-1/4 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 10-3/4 inches deep (including carafe handle) and carries a three-year warranty against defe (more…)

The Homebrewer's Answer Book (Answer Book (Storey))

Homebrewing — what hobby could possibly be more rewarding than the one that, in a matter of mere weeks, yields fresh beer delights to the happy brewer? It’s hard to beat that kind of payoff. Brewing beer is fun and delicious, but it’s also a demanding process, requiring proper equipment, impeccable sanitation, a basic understanding of the chemical process of brewing, and the patience to troubleshoot flavors and aromas that aren’t quite right. No matter how experienced the beer maker, unforeseen questions and problems can develop with every new batch of beer. Master brewer Ashton Lewis has seen and resolved hundreds of brewing problems and answered thousands of questions from amateur brewers as Brew Your Own magazine’s Mr. Wizard for 11 years. From simple queries on getting started (Are lagers and ales made differently?) to discussions on the niceties of foam (How can I improve head retention?), Lewis provides the answers that homebrewers need. And his straightforward (more…)
